IMPORTANT INFO CORNER: KNOW THE MEANING OF D1, D2, And D3 in your Car Gear.

A lot of people who drive automated cars aren’t making the most of what they have on the gear shift of their automatic vehicles. We’re all familiar with Drive, Neutral, Reverse, & Park, but what about D, D1, D2, and D3?

Why do automatic transmissions include D1, D2, and D3 gears?

According to Mechanicbase, when the brakes aren’t needed, you can shift into D1, D2, or D3 instead. These D settings are ideal for situations in which you wish to avoid using the brakes, such as when traveling downhill or when approaching a set of red lights.

So, in essence, this can be useful if you’ve got to slow down the car when your vehicle’s brakes fail. If your car is in third gear and you change to D1, it will downshift to first gear, and vice versa when you shift to D2.

What does D1 mean?

Take D1 gear when your car is having trouble tractioning out of mud or sand and needs the strength of gear 1.

What does D2 mean?

Select D2 when driving uphill on a mountainous road or other inclines. By shifting down to D2, you can quickly increase your engine’s power (just like on manual transmissions)

What does D3 mean?

Grab D3 gear (some vehicles don’t have it, but you may take the OD lever instead): if you’re trying to overtake and the engine revs are low, D3 will rev them up, giving you a big boost in power and allowing you to overtake more quickly.

When your D gear has an electronic or mechanical failure and can’t switch automatically, you should use the D2 or D3 instead. Fortunately, D2 and D3 can let you drive the automatic car as if it were a manual if you ever find yourself in this predicament.
