How Atiku Defeated Wike, Peter Obi And Anyim In The PDP Zoning Battle

The PDP Presidential ticket has been generating a lot of controversies amongst the Presidential aspirants who want to fly the ticket of the party in the 2023 presidential race.

The battle for the presidential ticket of the main opposition party created the pro-zoning faction and the anti-zoning faction.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and some top northern politicians were against the agitation for zoning of the party’s presidential ticket to the southern region while Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, former Anambra Governor Peter Obi, former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim and some other top southern politicians were pushing for the zoning of the PDP ticket to the southern region.

Atiku in his argument believed that zoning is unconstitutional and undemocratic because some competent politicians who are qualified to contest will be disqualified by the zoning arrangement.

Wike and other southern politicians pushed for zoning on the ground that the northern region produced the 2019 presidential candidate of the party and northern region is occupying the position of the party’s National Chairman. They also argued that the southern region ought to produce the next President because the north has been ruling the country since 2015.

However, a report by Daily Trust showed that Atiku Abubakar has defeated Wike, Peter Obi, Anyim and some other politician who were pushing for zoning of PDP presidential ticket to the southern region.

A 37-member zoning committee headed by Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State in their meeting on Tuesday affirmed that the party should throw its presidential ticket open for all aspirants to contest and test their popularities.

The PDP zoning committee had no choice than to agree with the position of the former Vice President because zoning might cause division in the party.

Their are fear that if PDP zones its presidential ticket to the southern region and disqualified all the northern presidential aspirants, top politicians from the northern region who might be aggrieved might not work for the success of the party in the presidential election.

The implication of the new development is that southern politicians who want to fly the presidential ticket of PDP will now face the northern presidential aspirants on the platform of the party.
